I wanted to give this podcast a listen because it touched on important topics for classroom management which is something I am really interested in learning before entering my own classroom.
As someone who has already stepped into a teaching role for the public school system it's very sad to see some students lack of motivation for any lesson. I've seen a mixture of two to three star students, the chatterboxes, class clowns, and the inevitable "i'm too cool for school" in every classroom. This podcast talks about the importance of building rapport in your classrooms which I couldn't agree more. Getting to their level is key before giving an educational command towards a teenager.
I like how Kathleen talks about sharing some personal life moments with students, while not having to get too personal some things are OK to share. Showing your students your personal interests outside of school makes the teacher more human and less like an authority figure. I also liked how she mentions the importance of accountability in a position of leadership. When the teacher makes a mistake it's best to own up to it in front of your students, say out loud "I made a mistake! But I'm going to show you how to fix it" is great because you're leading by example. In art class, students want to focus too much on the final product and tend to rush during the process which is a mistake. The process of experimentation with materials, patience, making mistakes is part of the fun when making art. Expect students to make mistakes because that's what makes you a better artist!
This podcast is great for professional development because as mentioned before it teaches educators how to build rapport with students which is essential for classroom management.
